“An Alfa-WHAT?” is usually what follows…
Alfajores (pronounced al-fa-ho-res) are a beloved sweet treat, particularly popular in Argentina. These indulgent cookie sandwiches are filled with a generous layer of dulce de leche and coated in either shredded coconut or chocolate - what's not to love?
Australia is known for Tim Tams and Wagon Wheels, France for macarons, and Japan for mochi balls. Argentina has its iconic alfajores... a national treasure. (Fun fact: Over a billion alfajores are consumed in Argentina annually!)
My parents were born in Mendoza, Argentina, and migrated to Australia in their late 20s. A few years later, I was born!
Growing up as an Australian-Argentinian, I developed a real passion for cooking and baking traditional Argentinian dishes. My mum and aunties still joke about my first attempt at making empanadas, where I got the onion and meat ratio completely off. As any fellow Argentinian would know, it’s a story they’ll never let me forget.
One thing I did get right is my baking! I like to think of myself as an enthusiastic amateur baker, always excited to try new creations (like the Minnie Mouse cake I made for my niece, pictured here).
I've been making alfajores for over 10 years, and after making a large batch for my engagement party, they quickly became a favourite dessert among friends and family.
So, I thought, why not share this unique taste of Argentina with the rest of Sydney? and that's how La Gordita Alfajores was born! (for those curious about the name, 'Gordita' is a sweet nickname my dad has always lovingly used for me and thought it would be the perfect fit for my business).
'La Gordita Alfajores' is a council approved and registered home based business.
